How to get the most from your 1:1

You will undoubtedly get the most value from your 1:1 if you prepare before the conversation. Make a list of the questions you want to ask and the topics you would like to discuss.

This is an opportunity for you to:

  • Ask questions : Is there something you don’t know the answer to that is stopping you from progressing a piece of work

  • Get guidance : Do you need your manager to give you direction on something

  • Ask for support : Are you finding something particularly challenging? What does support look like?

  • Talk about issues outside of work that are impacting your ability to do your job

So what can you do to get the most from your 1:1?

  1. Prepare in Advance:

    • Set clear goals and objectives for the meeting. Be really clear on what you want to get out of the meeting. I’m sure your manager will have their agenda too, but it’s fine for you to come to the meeting with a list of things for discussion

    • Make a list of topics or questions you'd like to discuss during the meeting.

  2. Be Proactive:

    • Take the initiative to schedule regular 1:1 meetings with your line manager. They may have a team of people to support so it will be helpful for the, for you to show initiative and make sure the meetings are booked in the diary

    • If there is anything that you would like your manager to review, consider whether it is worth sharing relevant documents or updates ahead of the meeting to give them chance to look over

  3. Establish a Positive and Open Communication and work towards building a strong relationship with your line manager:

    • Create a comfortable and respectful atmosphere for open and honest discussions

    • Listen actively to your manager's feedback, suggestions, and concerns

    • Be receptive to constructive criticism and be willing to learn and improve

    • There is also a point about willing to be open. This doesn’t mean taking yourself out of your comfort zone, but if you are willing to build a relationship, share information about your life and you as a person then you will find you will very quickly feel supported by your manager.

I have managed an individual that whenever you asked them “How are you” they would just say “Yeah good, how are you”. When I asked again they literally responded with the same thing. I ended up having to say to them that is was becoming difficult to form any kind of relationship with them. They were so closed off and generally didn’t talk to anyone other than their close friends about things going on outside of work. Once I had that conversation things did become a little bit better.

  4. Share Updates and Progress:

    • Provide updates on your ongoing projects, achievements, and milestones. Over time you will know how much information your manager would like when receiving updates. If you’re not sure just ask! You don’t want to waste time writing a huge update when they just want a high level summary

    • Share any challenges or roadblocks you've encountered and discuss possible solutions

  5. Seek Guidance and Support:

    • Discuss your career goals and aspirations with your manager. 1:1’s are your opportunity to speak about you so make the most of the time

    • Seek advice on professional development opportunities, such as training, workshops, or projects. If there is a course you would like to attend and you think it would be useful for your role then ask your line manager if you can sign up

    • Ask for guidance on how to improve your skills or overcome any obstacles you're facing

Remember, your manager wants you to succeed. It isn’t in their best interest for you to fail, so be ready to ask questions and get the support that you need.

  6. Address Concerns or Issues:

    • Use the 1:1 meetings as an opportunity to address any concerns or issues you may have. It is not a good idea to let things bottle up. If you bring forward any concerns in a respectful way you should be able to get them resolved through an effective conversation

    • Discuss any conflicts, workload challenges, or work-life balance concerns.

    • Propose solutions or alternatives and work collaboratively with your manager to find resolutions

  7. Collaborate on Goal Setting:

    • Discuss your short-term and long-term goals with your manager. Make sure you are clear on their expectations

    • Seek their input and alignment on your objectives and milestones.

  8. Take Notes and Be Clear on Actions:

    • Take notes during the meeting to capture key discussion points, action items, and decisions made. It is not always easy to remember everything that is said in the meeting!

Remember, 1:1 meetings are a valuable opportunity to establish a strong working relationship with your line manager. They are in your corner and want to work with you! By being prepared, proactive, and open to feedback, you can make the most of these meetings and elevate your professional growth forward.
